A bridge called Sanders Bridge reaches over the Cold Brook during a classic New Hampshire fall foliage day. The yellow hues and green of the surrounding pines colors the landscape and becomes that which fall landscape photographers dream about.
New Hampshire Landscapes like this one taken from the upper ledges of Avalon in Crawford Notch create pure magic. The beauty of Mount Washington and the southern presidentials is fully captured in scenes like this.
The Presidentials and Mount Washington in New Hampshire are some of the most beautiful and unforgiving mountains on the planet. Seeing them first thing in the morning at dawn is something special. Pink, blue, pale shades of purple...all of these colors exist early in the morning. Sunrises in NH are something special!
New Hampshire Landscape photography is awesome at Arethusa Falls. As the tallest waterfall in the State of New Hampshire, the rushing waters make for great photos especially with a person in the picture for scale. Fall is a nice time of year to shoot, although there aren't many fall colors to be had in the ledges that surround these massive falls. Tallest waterfall in the state of new hampshire, with impressive flow.
Autumnal Sunset on Franconia Ridge one of the most beautiful spots in all of the United States and certainly New Hampshire, this ridgeline is on the Appalachian trail and is rarely seen in such beautiful autumn light. Taken in the fall, photographs here are incredible.
Deep Winter Alpenglow. At sunrise on Mount Washington in the dead of winter, the light looks pink and inviting around the purple and blue landscape. The frigid cold is almost forgotten given the utter beauty of the mountain landscape at dawn.
The Tuckerman Ravine Sunrise is pink and vibrant, and there are no shadows cast from Boott Spur or Lions Head at this particular time of year. Alpenglow bathes the entire bowl in pink light and snow blows over the headwall.
A fine Mist Along the Brookwalk Trail at the Castle of the Clouds' biggest and most grand waterfall, called the Fall of Song. This waterfall is a small flume, and is impressive after rainfall and during the spring and autumn season.
From the ledges of Zeacliff, The Grand heart of the Pemigewasset is seen at sunset. In the distance from left to right is Whitewall Ledge in the middle ground, and Carrigan and Vose Spur in the background.
A gentle waterfall hides among the brush on the Imp Loop Trail along the Imp Brook. Taken during spring, the runoff is strong and the spring green foliage is perfect.
The majestic cliffs of Bondcliff in the remote Pemigewasset Wilderness are one of the greatest scenes in all of the White Mountains. The hike is over 9 miles one way, and it's one of the few places in NH that you can stand and not see a roadway. It is pure wilderness, and here the sky is colored in beautiful light as a storm moves in.
Taken from the classic White Mountain Viewpoint on Lake Chocorua, these are the first lights of the aurora over Mount Chocorua. Northern Lights are rare in NH, and these were spectacular show.
On Mount Washington, few things beat an Autumn Sunrise. The trick is to catch it on a day when it's not in the clouds. The red bunch berry srucbs and yellow sedge color the scene as mist rises from far away huntington ravine, and the sun colors the nearby tuckerman ravine. Observed from Boott Supr.
Mount Jefferson and Mount Clay are colored by a sunset from Mount Washington. The Appalachian Trail (Gulfside Trail) is highlighted by the setting sun on the autumn evening. All is orange and pink and red to the north.
Colorful Foliage at Lower Falls on the Kancamagus Highway is one of the most visted spots in New Hampshire during the fall months. Autumn foliage is beautiful, and the silky rushing water adds drama to the scene along the Kancamagus swift river.

New Hampshire Greatscapes Collection

At times, a New Hampshire landscape is simply too vast, too great, and too impressive to refer to in the ordinary sense of the word. When captured as images, they transcend the familiar in terms of composition, atmosphere and light; they resemble something entirely different, more like a striking and impressive fresco. These landscape images are able to evoke powerful memories for the familiar traveler, and a breathlessness for those who have yet to visit.

When an image captures the feeling of being utterly small in the presence of something looming and massive; when the viewer has no choice but to momentarily give up their sense of control over nature; this is the essence of New Hampshire landscape photography that I call New Hampshire Greatscapes.

Matt’s Greatscapes of New Hampshire collection is growing steadily each year, but only the most powerful New Hampshire landscape images find their home in the Greatscapes portfolio.

Prints from this open edition are available in a variety of sizes and mediums, signed and unsigned in the Matthew Stearns Photography Store.

All of the NH Landscape Photography found within this gallery can be purchased or licensed. Visit the Matthew Stearns Photography store for more details.
